THE LUGDUNUM AUCTION 26

18 December 2026 – Solothurn
Consignments welcome

Consign your coins & medals, and sell them successfully at auction
Going once, going twice – sold

Selling a collection is rarely an easy decision. It seldom begins with a price, but with a question: what will become of what has been gathered over decades?

We treat every consignment as what it is: the result of selection, patience and judgement. With us, your collection is not one among many. It stands at the centre of our work, from the first examination to the final payment.

Auction 21 – Collection of Martine, Comtesse de Béhague

Estimate CHF 250’000
Hammer price CHF 955’000

Auction 22 – The «Vaterland» Collection

Estimate CHF 425’000
Hammer price CHF 800’000

Auction 24 – The «Wisdom» Collection

Estimate CHF 700’000
Hammer price CHF 800’000

Why collectors consign to us

  • Cataloguing to academic standards. We work with the established numismatic literature, die studies and museum records. Our descriptions are precise, consistent and verifiable for years to come.
  • Provenance research for every eligible consignment. A newly discovered provenance can raise the hammer price of a rare coin by 40 per cent or more.
  • Selection, not volume. Where large auction houses prioritise volume, we prioritise selection: fewer lots, catalogued with greater care.
  • One point of contact. The numismatist who catalogues your coins is the one you speak to, from the first conversation to the final payment.
  • Insured and held in safe custody. From handover until the sale, your coins are insured and securely stored.
  • Settlement on the agreed date. Payment is made on the date set in your agreement, by bank transfer or, if you prefer, in cash.
  • A printed catalogue on request. A catalogue remains as a lasting record of the collection and of the collector who formed it.
  • A single-owner sale, where the collection warrants it. On request, we prepare an auction devoted solely to your collection, even at very short notice.

What we sell at auction

  • Ancient coins: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Celtic coinage with documented provenance.
  • Swiss coins and medals: notably gold and cantonal coinage struck before 1850.
  • Renaissance and artistic medals
  • French coins and medals
  • Thalers, ducats and multiple ducats of the Holy Roman Empire.
  • Gold coins and gold medals from around the world.

Not every collection belongs in an auction. We buy Goldvreneli, Swiss circulating silver coins and modern bullion coins directly
at current rates. Inherited a coin collection? Please see our page for heirs.

How your collection comes to auction

1. First assessment

Send us photographs or a list by email or WhatsApp. We will tell you which pieces are suited to auction and which are not.

2. Examination

We examine the coins in our premises at the Müllerhof, or at your home or your bank if the collection should not be moved.

3. Consignment agreement

We set out the terms, estimates and auction date in writing. From handover your coins are insured.

4. Cataloguing, photography, provenance research

Every lot is studied, photographed and – wherever possible – given its documented pedigree.

5. Your lots before the catalogue goes to press

You receive your lots with descriptions and estimates exactly as they will appear in the catalogue for your approval.

6. Auction and settlement

You can follow the sale in the saleroom or online. After the auction, we settle your account on the agreed date.

Provenance research: our expertise for higher hammer prices

Ex-Numis®

In 2015 we launched Ex-Numis®, the first online provenance research service for ancient coins. It rests on our digitised library of several thousand auction catalogues, the oldest from the late 19th century: almost a million images, which our image recognition compares in seconds.

Since then we have recovered more than 15,000 lost provenances. For you as a consignor, this is no academic detail. A documented provenance provides legal and ethical certainty, supports authenticity and can raise the hammer price considerably. Every eligible consignment goes through this process before it enters the catalogue.

Global reach & international network

We ensure that every coin and medal in our auctions receives the greatest possible attention, in Switzerland and on international markets. Over more than fifteen years we have built an extensive network, from international collectors and professional numismatists to museums and institutions, from Asia and the United States to Europe and the Gulf States.

Our sales also appear on Sixbid, NumisBids and Drouot, and through the AUEX live-bidding platform clients around the world take part in our auctions in real time. This digital network gives our consignments the reach of the largest houses in the trade.
